This book is an invaluable resource to those affected by IBD. The author is a registered dietitian with a Master’s degree in nutrition who has had IBD since the age of nineteen. (I also have a Master’s degree in nutrition and found all of her nutrition information to be accurate.) The first part of the book contains essential information as to how to achieve a nutritionally adequate diet despite the problems associated with IBD. You know, less is sometimes more. What I loved about this book as someone who is Newly Diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease is that the author does not put a lot of technical stuff in the book. Krohn’s disease is nothing to ignore. It is also known as Crones, but most commonly called Crohn’s disease, a gastrointestinal condition that is painful, hard to control, and incurable. Complications occur often for those with this disease.

It can cause bowel obstructions, ulcers, on the intestines, the anus, the genitals, and inside your mouth (much like canker sores), When an ulcer pieces the wall of the intestines, it becomes a fistula or connection between the intestine and your skin or another organ. This can cause serious complications if it is left untreated. Malnutrition and dehydration may occur, both because of your unwillingness and desire to eat and your body’s inability to absorb all the nutrients in your food.

But Krohn’s disease can cause other health problems as well. The eyes and skin may become inflamed. Kidney stones and gallstones may form. Even some cases of osteoporosis have been attributed to this conditions. What is Crohn’s disease, that it can cause so many horrible symptoms and complications?

It is an inflammatory disease of the bowels that causes disruptive swelling in the intestines, and is usually diagnosed in the twenties and thirties. But it can show up at any age.

It is important that you learn some of the risks involved. About one fifth of all people suffering from this dreadful disease have other members of the family that have it as well. If you have the condition, stop smoking at once. It makes Krohn’s disease more severe, and adds a greater risk that you will need surgery. Your risk of getting colon cancer or cancer of the anus is higher as well. However, immune suppressing drugs also increase the risk of cancer.

Those who live in Northern climates, urban areas, and highly industrial areas are more like to get the disease than others, probably because of the foods they eat. Natural foods that are low in fat and do not have added chemicals are healthier. That would pretty much cut out the fast food chains we city folk live on.

Some think that stress causes Krohn’s disease but there is absolutely no evidence that backs it up. Still, let’s face it…anyone who is living with a chronic and incurable disease is bound to have a very high stress level. It may increase the number of flare ups you have, or the severity of them, but it is highly doubtful that it can cause the disease.

Treatment for Crohn’s Disease

The goals and intentions of treatment for Crohn’s disease are to ease the cramping, pain, rectal bleeding, and diarrhea that are that are so prevalent in patients with the condition. Drugs, diet, supplements, surgery, or some combination of these things are used to attempt to control the symptoms. Unfortunately, there is no known cure. And they way it is treated depends entirely on what part of the digestive tract it is in, any complications you might have had, and how severe the disease is.

Treatment for Crohn’s disease may include the following:

• Steroids (cortisone)- Prednisone, the most common drug of this type, has been known to be very effective in some cases. However, it comes with some serious side effects of its own, such as water retention, mood swings, and lowering your ability to fight off other infections.
• Remicade (also known as Infliximab)- This drug is used only for severe cases which have resisted other treatments. It is called an anti-TNF substance, but needs much more research to be done to test its usefulness and possible side effects.
• Drug Therapy- This treatment for Crohn’s disease is an anti-inflammatory that uses mesalamine. The most frequently used form of this drug is Sulfasalazine. If it doesn’t help the patient, they may then try Pentasa, Asacol, or Dipentum. Headaches, heartburn, nausea and vomiting may occur as a side effect.
• Immune System Suppressors. Crohn’s pain may also be treated with drugs whose purpose is to suppress your immune system. Like prednisone they lower your resistance to infection, in fact, they are often used together in an attempt to fight the inflammation.
• Antibiotics- These are used to kill the bacteria that grown in the small intestine as the result of surgery or fistulas. Most commonly prescribed are tetracycline, ampicillin, cephalosporin, metronidazole, and sulfonamide.

Additional treatment for Crohn’s disease might come as fluid replacements or anti-diarrheal meds. If dehydration is present in the patient, fluids and electrolytes will be pushed. Your doctor might recommend codeine, diphenoxylate, or loperamide.

At some point in time, when no medication is working to ease Crohn’s pain surgery may be recommended. Unfortunately as many as three fourths of all patients will need surgery at some point. Usually, it is performed to resolve complications, such as perforation, blockage, intestinal bleeding, or abscesses. Removing a portion of the intestine sometimes helps, but is by no means a cure.

In extreme cases, treatment for Crohn’s disease may require the removal of the entire colon, in an operation called a colostomy.

If you are suffering from Crohn’s disease, diet can be very important. No, it doesn’t prevent or cure the condition, but staying away from certain foods can keep the symptoms from getting worse, and even help you to avoid an attack. You need to get daily nutrition, but some foods are going to exacerbate your disorder more than others will.

Malnutrition is unfortunately a common side effect of Crohn’s disease. This happens for two reasons…the small intestine is no longer able to digest and absorb the foods you eat properly, and, because of the loss of appetite, pain, cramping, and diarrhea, patients simply become afraid to eat and avoid it.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a Crohn’s disease diet that works to curb the carbohydrates that are difficult for most patients to digest. It has worked for some, but there is no real proof to support this diet. Unfortunately, every patient reacts differently to inflammatory bowel diseases, so there will never really be one diet that works for all.

You really need to experiment with foods, one at a time, and keep a diary of your reactions to each of them. If you cannot eat a vegetable that has been prepared in a sauce or casserole, perhaps you could eat it if you simply steamed it. Don’t just assume you can’t eat it…especially if it is a vegetable or fruit that you really need. But never try to eat fruits or vegetables raw. You’ll pay the price.

One of the most difficult aspects of trying to work out a Crohn’s disease diet is the fact that your condition will fluctuate; at times with little or now warning. You may be in remission for a while, and then suddenly have a very severe reaction to foods you were eating comfortably a few days ago. Or conversely, something you absolutely could not eat might cause you little or no trouble this time.

There is something called a low-residue diet. Basically, it eliminates foods that add residue to your bowel movements. The low fiber diet can be helpful in easing the cramping and pain, and seems to lessen the frequency of having bowel movements. On this diet you would avoid eating, seeds, vegetables, nuts, raw fruits, and corn hulls.

Supplements are often necessary, but never take them if they have not been prescribed by your physician. Magnesium, potassium, folic acid, vitamin D, and vitamin B12, are often missing in folks who are suffering from Crohn’s disease. Still, some patients manage to get full nutrition using a Crohn’s disease diet.

While many people go for long periods when their condition is inactive, when it flares up again, Crohn’s disease symptoms are numerous and devastating. These patients have to take medications for long periods at a time, are in and out of the hospital, and literally fight starvation because of their fear of eating.

What is Crohn’s disease, and what symptoms are you looking for? It is an inflammatory bowel disease that is often mistaken and misdiagnosed as ulcerative colitis or irritable bowel syndrome. But there is a difference. Ulcerative colitis affects only the top layer of the large intestine’s lining. Not so with Crohn’s. All layers can be involved…even when there are normal segments of bowel sandwiched between the diseased parts.

The first Crohn’s disease symptoms are usually diarrhea and severe abdominal pain. At the same time, or shortly thereafter, you may have skin problems, lose weight, see bleeding from the rectum, or run a fever. If the bleeding becomes serious, you might then become anemic. If a child gets the disease, it may slow development or even stunt his growth.

Because of the severity of the symptoms, patients begin to dread eating. There is no “safe” diet for these people, since all foods affect each of them differently. But in order to regain their health, and heal their bodies, they must have nutrition every day. Vitamins are not the answer, unless specifically recommended by their doctor.

One of the bad aspects of Crohn’s disease symptoms is the reality that you may get little or no warning of an attack. It may be mild or severe, and come on gradually or slam you all at once. Remissions do occur, but often give patients no pleasure, since they are always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

What is actually going on in your body to make this happen? Inflammation causes the cells in your intestine to secrete excess water and salt, which cannot be handled by the colon. At the same time, the bowels start swelling and eventually get thicker from scar tissue. When the contents of your digestive tract are hindered by this, pain and cramping occur. It can also cause the tissues to bleed.

Small ulcers that form on the surface of the intestines can get larger and penetrate through the intestinal walls. They can also form inside the mouth. Crohn’s disease symptoms are horrible. If you even suspect that you might have this disease, go to your doctor and have it diagnosed.
